Robbie Williams discusses his World Cup performance
After other A-List celebrities turned down hefty offers to perform at the opening ceremony, Robbie Williams defended his contentious choice to sing in Qatar during the World Cup.
Even in the face of international anger over Qatar's human rights record, which includes its criminalization of homosexuality and ties to Islamist extremism, the 48-year-old Rock DJ musician has asserted that it would be "hypocritical" to stay away.
Qatar has drawn criticism for its appalling treatment of women and members of the LGBTQ+ community. There, homosexuality is prohibited, and offenders risk fines and prison sentences of up to seven years.
The World Cup stadiums are claimed to have been built at the expense of many foreign labourers. FIFA's choice to stage the competition there has been mired in debate.
Williams, the singer of Angels, has passionately defended his decision to play at the Doha Golf Club on December 8.
The former member of Take That has stated that it would be improper for him to cancel performances due to worries about human rights because he has already performed in other nations with dubious governments.
Robbie claimed that if he avoided performing in areas where human rights were violated, "I wouldn't even be able to perform in my own kitchen."
"Of course, I don't condone any abuses of human rights anywhere," the singer told the Italian daily Il Venerd di Repubblica.
