Matt shows the progression of different microphone setups that were used so far in Theater 8. He compares the Blue Snowball with the Rode Procaster and the Shure SM48. He attempts to show the quality difference when used in a "Let's Play" environment with a focus on Couch Co-op.

Some Tips about using microphones:
* When using multiple microphones, you should keep all other sounds at least 3x the distance of your intended subject. So if your microphone is 3 inches from your mouth, everyone's mouth needs to be at least 9 inches away.
* raising gain will make you louder but it increases the volume of all ambient noise around you as well. It is almost always a better choice to move the microphone closer instead of increasing gain.
* Acoustic treatment helps but will not help as much as proper mic placement
* To further elaborate, acoustic treatment is not the same as sound proofing

Other things to note about this recording:
* The bass boost is much more noticeable for the Rode Procaster than the Shure sm48. Basically, the closer you get to the microphone, the more of a boost you'll receive in bass.
* The most noticeable difference between the condenser microphone and the dynamic microphone is how much of the rustling you can hear while I'm recording with the Snowball. You can really hear it every time I shift in my seat at all. You can also hear some reverb from the walls even when the microphone is up close and being used properly. The only way I'd be able to avoid that is if I had completely treated the room acoustically. (The room currently has 1" foam up but no bass traps and really 2" would be far superior)
* I'm not an audiophile nor do I have extremely expensive speakers/headphones so I notice only a minor difference between the Rode Procaster and the SM48. I am not sure if the sound difference is anywhere near the price difference. Again, if I was a singer I might notice a much bigger difference but I'm not.
* You probably noticed way more white noise on the dynamic microphones, that is probably due to my levels not being perfect. The snowball doesn't have this problem but it has the much worse problem of picking up actual background noise which is much harder to get rid of than white noise which can be removed with noise reduction in Audacity.
