ミウミウ's Super Mario Retrospective: A Retrospective (Super Mario Maker)
0Two years after playing through it the first time, I am pleased to present this look-back at ミウミウ's "Super Mario Retrospective," a full game composed of 32 levels that easily rivals Super Mario Maker 2's best super worlds. (This video takes us to the halfway point in the journey.) A note on the title: While some may assume that "Super Mario Retrospective" is a remake of the 1985 Super Mario Bros., such an inference would be erroneous. Certain levels (e.g., 1-1, 1-2, and 3-1) are indeed evocative of their counterparts in the original game, but all of the stage designs are completely original, and the majority stray so far from the source material as to be completely unrecognizable. That said, ミウミウ (who previously went by the handle ベルホヤンスク) has an eye for detail that merits Nintendo's official seal of quality, as every obstacle is meticulously placed to ensure fairness/visibility, with no sub-areas or invisible blocks, and indicators that clearly mark pipes containing piranhas. (The five pink coins in each level are never hidden or out-of-sight, but rather serve as bonus objectives requiring slightly more advanced use of the core platforming mechanics.) Although it lacks the detailed aesthetics and occasional puzzle elements of Mike D.'s acclaimed "Super Princess Daisy" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rekD8R5VvjE ), "Super Mario Retrospective" is a worthwhile blend of old and new thanks to ミウミウ's streamlined emphasis on platform action.
