Maruti Suzuki India chairman RC Bhargava has criticised India's high tax regime and the on-going regulatory challenges that have plagued the auto sector. He claims high taxes have made cars out of reach for majority of the Indians. Pointing out that there is a gap between the intentions of policies and the current realities, adding that this is one of the reasons for slower industrial growth. And he isn't the only one to flag this concern in recent times. Several other manufacturers have also raised this issue. Toyota suggests the government should reduce tax on cars by at least 50% in the next 10 years. Are cars still a luxury item in India, do we need to reduce taxes to spur demand?
