The PC version of Skyrim is not a particularly hardware-intensive game and its' textures and special effects can hardly compete with earlier 2011 releases such as The Witcher 2, Battlefield 3 or Crysis 2. However, Bethesda's latest open world often looks great regardless and there are even some particularly breathtaking parts of the city of Markarth in which my frame rate drops quite noticeably (from 50-60 FPS to a consistent 25). It's not hard to understand why considering how the complex architecture is combined with all sorts of water/fog effects and the game's ambitious draw distance, and while Skyrim is no technological milestone the game's attention to detail sure is impressive.
