Risk of Rain 2 has 11 core levels that get generated into any given run. The game can be infinitely looped for as long as the player wants, but these loops are split into 5 separate stages.

This of course means that part of the randomness of a run is in which map the game chooses for you at any given time. Not only are you relying on the items that you randomly get, but also which one of the maps you're going to be randomly sent to. And some maps are much, much more desirable to get on a run than others. Scorched Acres and Sundered Grove are, in my opinion, the worst maps in the game. They create an enormous roadblock for the survivor that seems unintentional by the game developers.

So lets quickly explore why that is, and why I think it's such a frustrating problem...
