Sean Murray has stated numerous times in many interviews that we would in fact be able to see other players in No Man's Sky. However disappointment swept the gaming community when two players happened upon the same planet only to discover their was no sign of the other.

Hello Games has been quite secretive about their massive upcoming title No Man's Sky, and for the most part, I'm ok with that. The game still having a sense of mystery up till the very moment millions click play is exciting... But neglecting to mention that a major component of the game has been stripped is just not good business practice.

With user reviews now flooding the internet, the consensus seems to be that while massively impressive on a technical standpoint, the game doesn't really have much else going for it. I don't think the ability to meet others would have saved this title completely from criticism, but I definitely think it would have padded the blow. Just one more example of why not to pre-order I guess.
