So here we have the remake of Space Harrier. I'm really about to get controversial now. I love this version of Space Harrier. Many will say that that is blasphemous. I really don't care what anyone has to say about that. There is no reason not to like this version of Space Harrier.

The most notable weak point of this remake is the music. With Outrun they did a stellar job of remixing all the songs we all know and love. However when it came to the very well known Space Harrier theme, it turned out to be less than stellar. It's not bad, it just could be better. It kinda grew on me, but the music for the bosses just straight up suck. It's a good thing boss battles are very short so that it can't remind me very long of how much they suck. Music aside, a very welcome addition is great new sound effects. This game sounds great on my system and is fun to play loudly. :) The graphics are actually very nice as well. They added some terrain detail which I think makes the game look a lot better. However if you're a purist.......well.....if you're a purist you won't even look at this game, but if you're a purist wannabe you can turn off the added terrain detail and it will look flat and boring just like the arcade. All the enemies and obstacles now move very smoothly thanks to the polygon engine and obstacles now look way more in proportion size wise in relation to your guy as they are much much bigger. Other added features were added to the gameplay like lock-on missles, flash bombs, barriers, extra lives, and a turbo fire button. Basically they made a very difficult arcade that was made to eat quarters into a game that is more balanced. Just like Outrun, confusion related deaths due to polygons being used instead of sprites also helps to balance the game out. It still is a relatively difficult game. The game defaults to easy when you first start the game up. I changed it to normal. It does have a hard setting as well. One thing I don't care for visually is the bonus stage where you ride the dragon that looks like a flying stiff, dried out turd with a kitten face attached to the front of it. Other than that I think the game looks and plays great.

I've played Space Harrier many times and never had as much fun playing the original arcade as I did playing this version. So the score so far is 2 for 10, next we will take a look at Virtua Racing.
