SEGASONIC The Hedgehog - Arcade - Attract, Intro & playthrough as Sonic [UHD 4K60]
Full gameplay longplay, playthrough, walkthrough of the 1992 SEGA arcade game Sega Sonic The Hedgehog. The Sonic game time forgot or at least SEGA never ported to any home format. Sonic the Hedgehog teams up with Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel as they try to escape the island prison of Dr Eggman! So with sonic 30th anniversary having just happened and with SEGA having failed to deliver any sort of decent celebrations, such as a new game or retro collection.
Randoised Gaming has done a playthrough on the rather forgotten SEGA AM3 arcade game. In part the game seems to have been an attempt to improve on the SegaSonic Bros. arcade game which was unreleased, Ray and Mighty look like altered version of the red and yellow Sonics seen in that title. While the game is well, put together in terms of sound and graphics. The odd decision to use a trackball controller was a huge mistake. Having actually played the game in Sega World London, many years ago. The controls were just dreadful and it's easy to see why this was never ported or even properly translated. Why AM3 didn't do a joystick version is anyone's guess.
As a result it appears the games release was somewhat pushed back from 1992 to 1993, but this isn't at all clear. Only a few arcades were ever exported outside of Japan, so for many Sonic fans it was very hard to find, files in the game shows SEGA had tried to tie in it with the terrible futurist TV series for the western version. But as the TV series was awful and quickly canned, it's easy to see why it was dropped.
Even with the latest version of MAME and a joystick the controls are a bit hit and miss to say the least. The rapids sections on stage six is a nightmare to get passed, but we were able to get to that point with out dying during test runs. Only one of Sonic's creators Naoto Ohshima is credited on the game and neither Hirokazu Yasuhara or Yuji Naka worked on this one. Which may have been another reason the game never got re-released as Yuji was said to have blocked ports of games he's didn't work on during his time at SEGA. Which doesn't present him in the best light if true. There were some rumours this was going to be ported to Sega 32X, but most likely that was people talking about Knuckles' Chaotix.
Overall it's a enjoyable if flawed arcade game and you can only wonder what might have been had SEGA AM3 chosen a better control system. There's a good reason reason trackballs were largely dumped by arcade games during the early 1990s.
Note this games uses a resolution of 416 x 224 which isn't quite 4:3 or 16:9. Even if you use a true pixel aspect it doesn't look quite right, it's seems to have been designed for a slight odd sizes, to best match the arcade original we have recorded this at 4:3 pixel aspect and scaled up to full screen afterwards.
