In the forest part of the opening cut scene these little balls of light appear. They are like the faery lights of old or will-o-the-wisps that hang suspended around the edge of the lake. Could these be the souls of some lost traveller that passed this way never to return? Nearby the leaves fall lazily to the forest floor giving the place a magical feel.

I never knew these were here until now, but if you watch the opening cut scene you can see they stand out quite clearly... just never noticed them before ; )

Edit: According to Japanese folklore, the Hotaru (Japanese fireflies) are symbols of the Hitodama - the souls of the newly dead. Could they be a reference to Mono's recent death?
