Today's chilling game for the Halloween month 2019 playlist is Shadows of Kepler, an upcoming Sci-Fi Survival Horror game on Kickstarter slated for a 2021 release. As an Unreal Engine 4 game, it gets full spatialized sound with X3DAudio HRTF [IRC_1037 tables]. That's good news for me, because it means I don't have to record Daymare 1998 with shitty HeSuVi audio now!
Shadows of Kepler...I'm not going to lie. It's janky. The controls often get stuck. Medium settings run as choppy as Ultra. The dialogue is some of the most unintentionally hilarious stuff I've heard in a while (he calls the tentacle alien "Mr. Squidward" for crying out loud). There's even one or two cheap monster placements you'd never survive on your first run. But honestly, even in this pre-pre-pre-alpha state, it fulfills that sci-fi horror niche that few developers have attempted in recent years ouside of Alien Isolation. The shotgun, while hard to aim, is immensely satisfying to fire and the gore effects are nice and chunky. It's also named "Venom Strike" after the best SNK girl's special move.
I have to give a special shout-out to the "idiot" deaths the developers bothered to include in this early build like the airlock at the beginning. I was actually shocked when 12:28 happened because it didn't in my test run.
