The shorts are doomed to fail as they are stuck with no escape, clearing houses don't have enough capital to survive and their overleveraged long swaps are the only thing keeping them alive.
However, soon the music will stop and the shorts will be trapped with no where to turn.
The shorts ended up in this mess in the first place as these long swaps, short swaps, credit default swaps and derivative swaps don't need to be disclosed. Infact, both Gary Gensler and the shorts fought to ensure these swaps didn't need to be disclosed.
This allowed the shorts to max out their accounts, as they weren't required to keep a capital buffer as swap positions weren't disclosed and therefore 'never existed' in the eyes of the regulators.
