The SEC can't actually stop synthetic shorting for fear of being sued and the courts overturning their punishment decisions. however, the shorts are still being drained which will cause the AMC squeeze.
Gary Gensler recently spoke to Jon Stewart and said that he wished he had more resources because the big banks can just take the SEC to court and win.
However, even though that is the case these shorts are still being drained of liquidity and the IMF is warning of massive repricing in the stock markets (aka a huge global crash) due to liquidity issued.
