The overall benefits of DDR4 aren't that great, and depending on the build, it isn't worth spending the extra money to upgrade to DDR4. Not only will you need to buy more RAM, but you will most likely need a new, more expensive processor and motherboard!

About this video: Should you buy DDR3 or DDR4 RAM in 2018? Well, the answer isn't as simple as you probably expect. Typically, newer is better, but in the case of RAM, that may not be true. What you really need to do is consider the use case of your final system. For example, it doesn't make any sense to use a brand spanking new DDR4 RAM in a home media PC, and by using DDR3 RAM and the older hardware that is associated with it, you can save a lot of money.
Another place that DDR4 RAM doesn't make a sense is in a NAS storage setup. You don't need the best of the best in a data storing machine, and you definitely don't need it in a simple word processing office style computer. Because of that, you can save money on all of these systems using DDR4.
So, is DDR3 RAM still worth buying in 2018? Well, it really just depends. You need to think about your end system in mind, and you have to realize that most of the time you don't need the best of the best hardware to run movies, do general web browsing, or even play modern games at medium settings. All you need is a system that will get the job done, which isn't the best of the best.
