Sierra Saturday: Let's Play Codename: ICEMAN Episode 19 - Moves like a fish, steers like a cow
Codename: ICEMAN continues as Commander John Westland recovers from his battle against the Russian Alpha and locates the warship Coontz, sitting high above them on the surface. Just when we thought that the obtuse, awful submarine piloting parts were over, it's time to remind ourselves one more time that Codename: ICEMAN hates you, by forcing you to navigate your way through the straits safely underwater, while the Coontz makes sudden, quick turns up above, as though to try to shake the BlacKhawk down below. It's another exercise in frustration as we attempt to steer our way to victory one final time...

Codename: ICEMAN - What if James Bond was a by-the-book, straight laced career military man? That's Commander John Westland. ICEMAN tells the story of navy commander John Westland - an all-american soldier in the Cold War era, who is called out of shore leave on Tahiti to perform a rescue mission of an ambassador captured by a Russian-backed terrorist organization.
It was released by Sierra On-Line in 1989, designed by retired California Highway Patrol officer-come-video game designer Jim Walls, and is his lesser-known entry into the Sierra classic catalog, behind the much more well-known Police Quest series. The game is a technical advancement in Sierra games, released only shortly after King's Quest IV and utilizing the full power of the new SCI engine with advanced movement and a beautiful Roland MT-32 soundtrack by Sierra mainstay Mark Seibert. It made heavy use of "Arcade sequence" minigames where the player must navigate in a submarine, which was the source for a fair amount of criticism of the game's entertainment value. The player is expected to follow strict procedure out of a detailed manual, and frequently would be stuck in dead-end situations unless meticulously careful in their play.
The NPCs are playing Codename: ICEMAN on the GOG.com DOSbox version with Roland MT-32 soundtrack.
Sierra Saturday is a weekly series on the Level 0 NPCs channel, where Matt & Luke relive their childhoods playing classic adventure games of the '80s and '90s (and beyond?). Sierra adventure games were a special breed of dark humor, brutally unfair puzzles and unforgettable characters, and we hope you enjoy this walk down memory lane with us.
