A playthrough of Arcadia System's 1990 NES game, Silver Surfer.

While Silver Surfer is not particularly easy, it is nowhere near as difficult as most people make it out to be. It's quite a bit like Ninja Gaiden in that regard: it's only really difficult until you've played it enough to know it well. That might sound super obvious, but so many people seem to dismiss some of these older games without a second thought if they get a Game Over on the first stage the first time they play it. Silver Surfer is quite demanding, but it's no more difficult than NG, Mega Man, Rygar, or Bart vs. the Space Mutants. They each required a SIGNIFICANT time commitment to master. And hey, it's a mere shadow of the challenge that BattleToads poses. No doubt.

I think the easiest way to express my feelings on Silver Surfer is in the form of the old vocabulary-lesson analogies from elementary school: Silver Surfer is to NES shoot 'em ups as Batman is to NES platformers. IKR? Right on the money.

The music here is incredible and would easily rate in my top 5 favorite soundtracks on the NES, and the graphics are smooth, well detailed, and full of tons of really neat flourishes that give it a surprising amount of personality for an 8 bit title. The controls are superb; whine if you must about the size of Surfer's sprite or his sluggish speed (at least compared to the likes of Gradius and Life Force), but it is what it is, and when you know it well enough, isn't really an issue :) They are responsive and always predictable because of their reliability, and as long as you anticipate the dangers, you'll be fine. If you don't move out of the way quickly enough and end up dying, it's typically your own fault, not the game's. Just like Gradius, Life Force, and Gun Nac :)

I did upload a playthrough of this a couple of years ago, but the old 240p video doesn't really seem to cut it with all of improvements YouTube has made. And so, here we go with a 720p60 rendering to keep all the fun sprite-flickering intact! Wee!
