This video demonstrates how to perform a glitch called the Citrus Clip in order to skip the very first mission (the part where you rescue Zelda from Hyrule Castle). Doing this allows you to skip the Level-1 Sword, and you can go straight to the first pendant palace.

Start a new game. You may want to take the Lamp from the chest inside Link's house.

Exit the house and press DOWN against the angled portion of the cliff that's just south of Link's house. You should have Link's nose pressed up against a wall, with two guards to the right (YOUR right. Not Link's right).

Here, you will need to alternate between DOWN and UP AND LEFT on the D-Pad for every other frame. This is easy for a TAS to accomplish, but for humans, you will need to use a technique called Select Buffering.

Basically, press DOWN AND SELECT at the same time, and Link will move down for just one frame. Then press UP AND LEFT AND SELECT at the same time, and Link will move up/left for just one frame. Repeat this process until Link is in just the right spot.

The "right spot" is shown in the video, and it's hard to describe without a video cue. But after a few Select-Buffered inputs, Link should be fairly clipped into the cliff.

Once at the right spot, Select Buffer a DOWN AND LEFT input, and if you did everything correctly, Link will pop out on top of the cliff to the south.

Now get really close to the bottom edge of the screen, hop off the cliff to the right, walk to the right so that you can walk UP onto the cliff on the other side, then transition to the next screen to the right. Now hop UP off the cliff, and you're free to explore a rainy Hyrule without having saved Zelda or obtained the Sword!
