Skipping The Sphinx Riddle in Shadowgate (NES) - A Wild Glitch Appears! #shorts
2,564In Shadowgate for the NES, there's a trick you can utilize to speed up the sequence with the Sphinx and his STUPID riddles.
Normally when you enter the room with the Sphinx, you're supposed to attempt to walk past him, which will prompt him to halt you and randomly ask one of six riddles. In order to continue to the next room, you need to bring him an item that corresponds to the answer of the riddle. These items include the Skull, the Bellows, the Map, the Mirror, the Broom, and the Horseshoe.
However, if you hand him the Broom before giving the Sphinx a chance to speak, you will be able to proceed as if you've just correctly answered the riddle, and this will save you the hassle of having to collect random Skulls and Maps and such.
Giving any other item to the Sphinx (unless there's something I'm missing) will result in your character being transported back to a previous area, as if you've incorrectly answered the riddle.
So this trick is super handy if you're trying to beat the game fast like in a speedrun or something.
