Ubisoft was in the news this week - with a bunch of interesting tidbits and an update on when we can expect to see their sea battler Skull & Bones finally come up for air.
Skull & Bones
--------------------------
As part of it's latest earnings call, Ubisoft has confirmed that the shared-world pirate game Skull & Bones is now expected to release in the 2022-2023 financial year. The game was originally revealed nearly 4 years ago at E3 2017 and has already seen significant delays. Last gameplay shown was back in Jun 2018. While built on the ship combat of the Assassin's Creed series, the game has live-service elements, with a big focus on co-op play.
AAA vs Free-to-Play
--------------------------
Ubisoft are pivoting to a blend of AAA and Free-to-Play releases for their franchises. News comes after announcing The Division: Heartland last week - a new FTP release in the popular series. Directly cited Call of Duty as an example, with the main COD releases complimented by the FTP Warzone.
Ubisoft clarified that it doesn't mean they are reducing AAA output:
▸ "We are excited to be investing more in free-to-play experiences, however we want to clarify that this does not mean reducing our AAA offering. Our aim is to continue to deliver premium experiences to players such as Far Cry 6, Rainbow Six Quarantine, Riders Republic and Skull and Bones to name a few while also expanding our free-to-play portfolio and strengthening our brands to reach even more players."
As a side note, they are also adding the tagline "A Ubisoft Original" to their upcoming titles.
