Previously, Davilas did the quest "Retaking Thirsk" and helped Bujold and her companions retake Thirsk Mead Hall from the Rieklings. When that was done, he handled some objectives for Thirsk's residents. Then, he retrieved Kagrumez Resonance Gems from Nchardak, the Dwemer ruin north of Tel Mithryn, and from Revus Sarvani, a Silt Strider attendant west of Tel Mithryn. Now, he will explore the Dwemer ruin Kagrumez, which is south of the Temple of Miraak.
After resuming, Davilas enters Kagrumez. In the central chamber, he finds and takes out some Reavers that have taken over the place. On the leader, he finds two Kagrumez Resonance Gems and "Raleth Eldri's Notes on Kagrumez".
To progress through this dungeon, Davilas must look at the door to the north and take note of the pattern on the gate. In my case, it was middle-left and lower-right. On the console in the center, he must place Kagrumez Resonance Gems in the corresponding spaces. Only two gems should be required. Afterwards, some Dwarven constructs will attack, and Davilas must defeat them. When they have been reduced to spare parts, the gate to the north will open up.
Along the path to the north, Davilas finds a gate with a pattern that requires three Kagrumez Resonance Gems. This starts the objective "Find Resonance Gems across Solstheim to complete the Kagrumez trials". In my game, the pattern in the second gate is top-middle, bottom-middle, and bottom-left. This chamber also has a friendly Steadfast Dwarven Spider that Davilas can adopt as a pet.
In the center room, Davilas enters the second pattern. This triggers the appearance of more Dwarven constructs. Also, flamethrowers appear around the room, as well as a maze of walls. Once all the enemies are defeated, the traps disappear, and the second gate opens.
Continuing on through the northern halls, Davilas finds another potential pet, a Steadfast Dwarven Sphere. He also finds the third and final gate. In my game, the pattern in the third gate is top-left, center, bottom-left, and bottom-right.
Back in the center room, Davilas enters the third pattern. This triggers the apparance of even more Dwarven constructs, including powerful ballistas. Electrified water also appears on the floor, so be careful. Once all the enemies are defeated, the traps will be removed, and the third gate will open.
Once Davilas goes past the third gate, the objective to gather Resonance Gems is concluded. In the last treasure room, he can find the Dwarven Black Bow of Fate, which has a 50% chance for 25 points of Health, Stamina, and/or Magicka to be absorbed from an enemy. Interesting.
Next, Davilas will take care of something at the Castle Karstaag Ruins. Before going to Karstaag, he fast-travels to the Glacial Cave along the northern coast. After taking care of a few Rieklings in this small cave, he claims Karstaag's Skull from the back wall.
Afterwards, Davilas must gain entry to Castle Karstaag. To do so, he fast-travels to the Castle Karstaag Caverns. He enters and explores these caverns, which are infested by Rieklings. If you still need to collect 50 Riekling Spears for Hilund at Thirsk Mead Hall, this is a good place to gather them.
At the end, Davilas finds the exit to Castle Karstaag Courtyard, where there are some Rieklings, including a Mounted Riekling. The Mounted Riekling holds the Castle Karstaag Key, which opens the Master-level door into and out of Castle Karstaag.
Once Davilas is ready, he examines the throne to place Karstaag's Skull there. Karstaag comes to life as a giant ghost. He protects himself with an ice storm. His physical attacks are extremely powerful. He can summon up to three Ice Wraiths at a time. He is resistant to physical attacks, but he is very weak to fire, especially spells like Fireball. A Staff of Fireballs and a decent Destruction skill will make short work of him. Upon defeating Karstaag, Davilas gains the power "Summon Karstaag". This summons Karstaag to fight for him for 120 seconds. However, he can only use this ability three times, and only while outdoors.
Afterwards, Davilas fast-travels home to Lakeview Manor in Skyrim for inventory management. When that is done, he fast-travels back to Raven Rock on Solstheim.
Next time, I expect to start one last dungeon for this playthrough, Kolbjorn Barrow.
