Storywise, Dragon Quest Builders is closely related to the original Dragon Quest game. It has been described as Dragon Quest Minecraft, but I feel that there is more to it than that. In this game, you have to rebuild the ruined cities of Alefgard. This is a fun little game. Lots of building, and lots of monster fighting. The combat is pretty similar to top-down 2D Zeldas.

After viewing the title screens, we begin Chapter 1: Cantlin (time 4:52). The game allows the player to customize the protagonist's gender, hair color, skin tone, and eye color. I name my protagonist Davilas.

A brief scene plays after the character is designed (time 6:21). It should be very familiar if you have played all of the first Dragon Quest game.

Then, a voice speaks to our protagonist (time 7:08). Davilas awakens inside a crypt.

After getting up, Davilas first has to move around (time 8:28). On the PS4, you can move with the left stick and press the circle button to jump. After he has moved a little, the disembodied voice will speak to him again.

After the dialogue, Davilas must grab the three White Petals (time 9:40). The voice tells him a little about his abilities.

Then, Davilas must start building at the tree stump, which serves as a crafting station (time 10:12). He must create some Healing Cream, which requires the three White Petals. Once he has done this, the voice speaks to him some more.

Afterwards, he must use his new Healing Cream to cure his wounds (time 11:03). On the PS4, this is done with the square button. Afterwards, the voice speaks to him again. Now, it is time to get working on a way out of the crypt.

First, Davilas must take the provided Broken Branch (time 12:09). Then, at the tree stump, he can use the stick to construct a Cypress Stick. The voice will speak to him some more.

Afterwards, Davilas must equip the Cypress Stick under the Equipment section of the main menu (time 13:37). On the PS4, the main menu is accessed with the X button. Davilas already begins with Ragged Rags, which provide little protection. Once Davilas has equipped the Cypress Stick, the voice explains that weapons can be used not only to fight enemies but also to gather materials.

Next, Davilas must begin gathering materials (time 15:04). Pressing the triangle button causes your protagonist to strike with the equipped weapon. Davilas must now collect 10 blocks of Earth by breaking them apart with his weapon and then collecting them. There is plenty near the tree stump. The voice speaks to Davilas again once he has gathered 10 Earth blocks.

Afterwards, Davilas learns how to place materials (time 15:54). Earth blocks can be placed to create walls and footholds. Davilas can place Earth blocks at the red pointers to make his way out of the crypt.

The disembodied voice speaks some more when Davilas heads outside (time 16:29). It sounds like things are not well in Alefgard. The disembodied speaker identifies herself as Rubiss.

Then, we get our first glimpse of the Cantlin Plains, the Ravaged Realm (time 18:27). This is where we'll spend the first chapter of the game. The player earns the trophy "Escape Artist" for getting out of the crypt. After the establishing shot, Rubiss speaks more of Davilas's duties here. To help him rebuild the city of Cantlin, she bestows upon him the Banner of Hope, which he must take to the ruins of the city.

After the scene, Davilas gains control outside his crypt (time 20:09). The city of Cantlin is in view just to the west of the crypt. Along the way, Davilas picks up some Earth and Broken Branches.

At the ruins of Cantlin, Davilas uses the Banner of Hope on the stand in the middle of town (time 22:12). Light spreads out over the ruins of Cantlin. This is now Davilas's base of operations. Also, a girl arrives.

Davilas talks to the new girl (time 22:56). This is Pippa, the first new resident of Cantlin.

He talks to Pippa again (time 23:26). The exclamation mark over her head indicates that she has a quest request. The first request is to repair a dilapidated house in the northwest corner of town. To this end, Davilas receives five Earth blocks.

After receiving the request, Davilas sets to work repairing the house. He must use Earth blocks to fill in the holes in the house's walls. The walls must be at least two blocks high.
