Slam Dunk Arcade
The game is centered on the NBA play-off with teams that recall the real NBA teams of the time in terms of social colors, aesthetic and qualitative characteristics of the players, city and logo, but for rights reasons the teams themselves only present the name of the city (for example the Golden State Warriors are present under the name of Oakland and the Utah Jazz as Salt Lake City) and no NBA play-off has ever presented exactly the 16 teams present in the game.
There are five players per team (unlike other titles of the time that presented fewer players) indicated in their roles and who present the typical characteristics of their role; for example, the point guard is short and fast, the shooting guard is fast and skilled at shooting from distance, the center is big, slow and when dunking or rebounding he gets the better of the opposing guards by pushing them. Each player of each individual team has a general evaluation of his ability visible when choosing the team in the form of a colored bar.
There is also a commentary of the match in English in which the commentator names the teams and has a set of comments used for individual actions, from the block to the three-point shot, from the alley-oop to the fade-away shot. Some baskets are shown again with a slow-motion replay.
The game features a multi-directional control and three buttons that provide a wide range of solutions for each phase of the game: with the A button in the attack phase (ball possession) you shoot a basket and in the defense phase (ball to the opponent) you attempt to block a shot or try to capture a rebound, with the B button in the attack phase you pass the ball to the teammate indicated by the cursor (while the player you are controlling has a higher brightness than his teammates) and in defense you try to steal the ball from the opponent, with the C button in attack you move the cursor of the teammate to pass the ball to and in defense you change the player to control.
There are many plays available and they are explained from time to time in the interval between one quarter and the other of the games: it is in fact possible to shoot in elevation, dunk, fake the shot, fake a dunk to conclude with a lay-up or to pass the ball to a teammate, conclude a successful rebound with a tap-in, shoot in fade-away, perform an alley-oop, exploit a teammate for a pick and roll and more.
Slam Dunk makes heavy use of rubber-banding, as did many arcade sports games, to keep games close and dramatic. The team that was falling behind would start to steal the ball more successfully, miss far fewer shots, and block more dunks.
This is what ruins the game, increasing opponents skills and challenge the player is great, but nerfing the player's team is a low blow, if you're in great advantage all your players become weaklings, incapable of doing even simple actions.
