Sleeping Dogs special pt. 3 - don't leave your wardrobe open
5In this last part of the Sleeping Dogs special, we'll take a look at what happens if Wei Shen goes to town with his wardrobe open.
Escaping from the tutorial fight, you are able to start a cutscene while Wei is free to do anything, potentially glitching things up. Unfortunately most of the meaningful prompts are still disabled in the game world at this point, such as garage prompts or mini-games like Karaoke. But you can open up your wardrobe, and keeping it open as the cutscene starts makes it stay open during the next mission.
So, you're at night market with Jackie, but you are also changing clothes at the same time. Trying to browse clothes crashes the game. Trying to save a costume preset but cancelling out of it crashes the game. The L1 and R1 buttons (which turn Wei Shen around) do not do anything in this state. The zoom button changes the graphics but does not do anything beyond that. Can't open start-menu at the moment, and Wei refuses to take out his cellphone as well. Simply closing the wardrobe usually works without the game crashing, but in my tests the game crashed later anyway when visiting a clothes shop. It seems that after starting this glitch... your gaming session is DOOMED.
One pretty interesting side effect of having the wardrobe open is that most NPCs and enemies lose the capacity to do things. Jackie does not walk autonomously through the level, which means that you are able to escape the hoods with him and go wherever! Although this is a bit arduous since you have to keep pushing Jackie to keep him near at all times. But hey, now this mission can be escaped too.
The streets of Hong Kong still lack automobiles, as they did when escaping the tutorial fight earlier. Some people have spawned in the city, but they don't look like normal civilians - they look more like the shoppers at the market. Garage prompts are active, but activating one will end in tears: Wei just gets frozen in one spot. Cancelling out of the menu, you hear the wardrobe noise and then the game crashes.
You could probably take Jackie out to the beach and drown him, but I'm not sure if doing that would do anything interesting. I think the game would realize that Jackie is dead and just fail the mission, so I didn't try it. Some other things too remain untested, like opening your wardrobe while the wardrobe is open, but I would imagine the results are not worth it since you'd have to push Jackie around for literally an hour to get to where you want, and the game would most likely just crash in the end.
Just for fun, I did try to beat the mission "normally" while the wardrobe was open. You have to push Jackie around a lot, and sometimes he teleports ahead in the level to get where the game has scripted him to be. All enemies are passive, only attacking Wei if he gets too close, making the fights quite easy. Unfortunately I had forgotten that there was a mandatory clothes shop section in this mission. Going near it while wardrobe is open crashes the game once again, so it is impossible to play through the mission like this.
Which is a shame, since this could have been an interesting exploit to try out in the other levels as well, maybe even a speed strategy. Imagine a car chase where the enemy is passive and refuses to start driving? Sadly, this was not meant to be. And since you can't replay the mission Going Under, you can't do this glitch later on in the game either. Maybe if another mission concealed a similar loophole of being able to go and open up Wei's wardrobe at a wrong time? We can only hope.
