In this episode of Oyxgen Not Included I try to find the sources of lag in the game and how to fix that lag. See more below.

TLDR: Use Hatches to delete excess items.

I first try to turn most of the map into a vacuum to see if that helps. I figured calculating all the gasses and melting and such must take a lot of CPU. Turns out this had no real effect.

Next I try cleaning up most of the crud on the floor and destroying some of the materials that had built up. That didn't help much.

The thing that really got the frame rates back up was to delete almost all the extra materials and storage containers, including fridges. It seems that keeping track of all those items was the main source of lag. Removing the natural gas power plants also helped quite a bit. Removing dupes helped slightly but wasn't the main cause.

For fun I scaled up to 100 dupes and then 200 dupes and the game was still able to run fairly well.

So how do you actually combat the lag then?

- use hatches to eat items and make coal (then burn it)
- don't mine stuff unless you really need it
