In this episode of Oxygen Not Included Outbreak I use very hot rocks (and some magma) to experiment with boiling polluted water to make steam and fresh water. I find an interesting quirk with sand. If you dump 100 grams/sec of polluted water onto a very hot surface (300 C) you get no sand. If you dump it at 101 grams/sec you get a large volume, but low mass, of sand.

I try various designs and temperatures to see how much fresh water you could get out of such a real world setup.
