Snail Bob 4 Space is a fun and interesting puzzler. Sure, at first glance it may look to be a platformer, but really, what kind of platformer would be any fun with anything that moves at, for lack of a better term, a snail's pace? There may not be any heart-pumping, blood-chilling, over-the-top action, but again, that's hardly the game you'd expect with a snail. No, instead, Snail Bob 4 Space is a game that requires some thought. It's a puzzle-game featuring a character that you have no direct control over. How's that work then? Read on.

In the game, you play the intrepid Snail Bob, who has inexplicably been chosen to go into space. The astronaut (snailonaut? snailtronaut? Whatever.) training program will familiarize you with the basic premise of the game. Snail Bob will wander mindlessly from the left of the screen towards the right. While he does that, you have to guide him using the environment to prevent him from getting into any sort of trouble. Sure, the training levels won't actually have any dangers, but you'll run into those soon enough.

The most common way to control Snail Bob is to reverse the gravity. This causes Snail Bob, and anything else not nailed down for that matter, to float up into the air. When Snail Bob reaches the ceiling, or whatever obstacles happens to be there for him to run into, he'll continue crawling along. How he manages to do that with only his shell touching the ceiling is perhaps a mystery never to be solved by mankind, but he manages anyway. You often have to use precise timing to ensure that he doesn't touch anything he shouldn't, like laser beams, force-fields, or vicious blue aliens. And that's where it starts to get pretty tricky.

Barring any intervention, Snail Bob only ever moves in one direction, from left to right. You can click on his shell to stop him, but you can't make him turn around. There are certain places where you can make him turn though, but these are level dependent. You thus have to analyze the level quickly (or stop him in his slime tracks) to ascertain the best way to go about it. You don't have any lives, so you can try it as many times as you can, so don't be afraid to experiment. Other levels will play with his movement even more, giving you not only reverse gravity, but also attractors, moving platforms, teleportation pods, and the sort. It'll take some brain power to utilize all of these to get Snail Bob to the exit, and while most of the puzzles are fairly easy, there are a few real puzzlers that'll have you trying again and again.

More than that though, each level has three stars that can be collected. These aren't needed to finish the level, but of course it adds to the sense of accomplishment to be able to collect all three. Some are in plain sight, but more often than not they blend in with the background environment so spotting them can be almost as, if not more so, challenging than actually finishing the level. Some levels will even require that you get Snail Bob to interact with the environment in order to reveal the stars.

So if you're looking for a fun, cute, and quirky little puzzle game, then look no further than Snail Bob 4 Space, as it's got all the puzzling that you could look for!
