Firebug 2 - Game Walkthrough (1-15 lvl)
Hey, remember that donut level from Super Mario Brothers 3 where if you stayed on one donut for too long, it would start to wobble, flash red, and then fall causing Mario to plummet to his untimely doom and how you absobalautely hated that level yet kept at it for hours because you absolutely knew that this time you were going to get it right and finally beat the stage? Well, Firebug 2 is something like that, only replace chubby Italian plumber for flaming little bug that sets fire to all the wood he touches.
The basic premise of the game is simple enough. You run around the level, collecting jelly beans. The problem for our little firebug though, is that all the wood he touches burns and eventually plummets to the water below. This thus makes for some rather interesting levels, where you have to jump from platform to platform, slowly setting the entire place ablaze in your sugar-addled rush to collect more and more jelly beans. And like Mario, the levels may start out simple enough, but soon they become deviously difficult and require precise Nintendo timing just to get everything right. On the plus side, you're not limited to a certain number of lives which (unless you know how to get unlimited lives in World 1-2) allows you to experiment, make mistakes, and keep your blood pressure at a reasonably healthy rate.
The game isn't all just jumping from platform to platform though, you'll soon run into other critters like rockets or bouncy balls of goo. These can all be interacted with in different ways, and indeed, you'll need to interact with quite a few just to pass the levels. So it's not all just speed and quick reflexes (though those are certainly a large part of the game) but also critical thinking and puzzle solving.
The graphics of the game are quite charming, though simple. Then again, no one ever said that simple had to be bad. The sprites are cutely drawn and goes well with the feel of the game. The fire animations for burning blocks is actually pretty good, and ranks pretty high on my list of 2D fire animations.
Perhaps where the game really shines, other than the gameplay, is the music. It's amazingly catchy, and you can't help but smile when hearing it or to tap your feet to the tune. It's that catchy. And it helps the game as well by providing you with a nice atmosphere for your death-defying leaps and stunts. Sure, it may seem at contrast with the raging inferno you're causing, but strangely, it seems to fit rather well.
Another plus for the game is the ability for players to custom tailor their own levels of devious difficulty granting them licenses to laugh maniacally with thunder and lightning crashing in the background when they see just how difficult it is for other players to solve their levels. Well, perhaps the thunder and lightning aren't included, but you get the general picture.
Well, that about wraps it up for the game. If you haven't tried it yet, go for it now, it's one of the most addictive and fun games out there. Cheers!
