3And they shit just keeps on piling up. Ok, so I finished Ikari Warriors. It was awful. The "boss" at the end of the third stage was already dead and, you know what? That was great. Other than how useful the tank is that represented the only thing I actually liked about the game. Because yea, either he was already killed in the coup or he took his own life either way I love that you get there and he's already gone. I didn't love not knowing how to get OUT of the room. And I didn't love the final level, that at the very end start throwing robots with lasers at you. But whatever, it's done. They really tried to do an impossible task porting that game to the NES and IMHO it went badly. But they tried.
Athena was next up and I cannot tell you how much I hate this game. It lacks basic player feedback to know what the hell is going on. And it's another game with a myriad of power ups and power downs that drop but without any instruction manual etc. you have no idea what any of it does other than trial and error. How the hell are you supposed to guess that a school girl dress is a 1up? Especially when you have to figure out where the life counter is to begin with. And then there's the ultimate weapon, a huge fuck you fire swords that, oops, drains your OWN life when you use it. Argh! But that's not the worst of it, no, the worst is the fact that the bosses don't have any indication that what you're doing to them has any effect. They never register when you damage them. Which leads to a big problem come level 5 when the boss is immune to attacks except from a certain weapon. A certain weapon that cannot break blocks, and where only ONE is hidden in the map, in an area you have to break a lot of blocks around. So if you don't clear the blocks before you get the bow? Softlocked. If you don't grab the club after beating the boss? Softlocked. No. You should never be putting the player in a situation like that.
