My Top 10 PC Games of 1999 + Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Review
Well, at this point it's a bit of tradition to take a look back... twenty years or so and count of the best PC games that I've played from that year. Of course, since 20 years isn't enough time to have played everything, all I can do is limit the list to games I have played. And it's really hard to find release dates that old, sadly. But I compiled the list the best I could. However, 1999 was not the best year for PC games. Consoles were on the rise and taking the world by storm. But I've been cataloging the PC games and there's no point in stopping that now. I also wanted to go back and highlight what I thought was a fantastic game released this year. I don't usually play current games (my backlog is far too long for that), but once in a while I grab something new and just run with it, and this year it was Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. Not really an 'underdog' as I prefer to highlight, but still a game very, very worth playing.
As usual, since my list is pretty ramble-intensive, and I kept getting derailed by the game, I'll go ahead and post them here in the description for ease of viewing.
10) Sim City 3000
9) Drakan: Order of the Flame
8) Descent 3
7) Quake III Arena
6) Half-Life: Opposing Force
5) Rollercoaster Tycoon
4) Aliens vs Predator
3) Need for Speed: High Stakes
2) Unreal Tournament
Honorable Mentions:
Counter-Strike. It's a mod. Initially released in 1999, commercially released in 2000.
The Playstation. Seriously, I could do a top 10 list on it alone AND ALMOST DID.
Planescape: Torment. Game I most want to play from 1999 on PC.
1) System Shock 2
As for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, it's everything I could have wanted in a spiritual successor to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The play is amazing, the level design is well done, the combat is fun, bosses are great, plenty of secrets... it seems slightly "marred" by all the Kickstarter backer content, but honestly none of that really phases me. It's neat that it's all in there, and those people helped make this game a reality so why not? I'm very glad this game turned out to be a success, unlike several other Kickstarter backed games. There's plenty to do here, and the promise that more will be added. But even if they don't end up managing to include everything, this is still very much worth playing as it stands. A complete, fantastically fun game. -- Watch live at https://www.twitch.tv/the_nametag
