In the sea of new and upcoming RTS games of 2024, one indie development team made me stunned with awe at their beautiful, amazing and most definitely human made art. This design along with a great mix of gameplay mechanics in the making has bridged the gap between artful turn based and practical real time animations and graphics. Thus Songs of Silence might not be the RTS hybrid I or you ever thought to play, but it is definitely one we deserve to be able to play, on PC and Consoles. The new demo of this hybrid between turn-based and RTS gameplay is the perfect opportunity for you to check if my words hit the mark or am I full of hot air.
So why do I, and apparently many more people, love this first taste of Songs of Silence? I would say it probably has a lot to do with three main selling points of the current version: the beautiful visual style, the amazing blend of turn based world map progress with the autobattler style real time battles and lastly the card system which is present on both gameplay levels and replaces spells, upgrades and abilities you would expect in this kind of a game.
Now, if you start the campaign part of this demo, you are treated to a mini story intro and then thrown head first into hot water with an unwinnable battle against the forces of Silence. These creatures of all shapes and sizes tear through your mounted knights, infantry phalanx and shake off both trebuchet energy strikes and meteors from the heavens like they were mosquitoes.
Things you can take a look inside a settlement is what it produces for you, which is usually gold and wood and depending on special buildings, also divine favor. A resource used for summoning magical units and using some specific cards on the campaign map.
Each unit you examine doesn’t just have great art attached to it, but a host of different attributes besides the main ones which are power and health. Examining enemies and setting up your own units and their positions in your army is a key element in properly playing Songs of Silence. Some units will shred specific enemy ones, while doing very little damage to others.
