This method has long been known to enable two players to defeat Knuckles in ridiculous time. It's also been known that it's possible with one player too, but much more difficult.

However, by luring Knuckles over to the left, Tails will get stuck in Knuckles' sprite with far higher consistency. I think it has something to do with Tails wanting to default to a position slightly on Sonic's left (since you spend most of the game moving right).
