Sonic 3D Director's Cut - SEGA Mega Drive - Intro & Gameplay of Green Grove & Rusty Ruin [4K60]
It's rare to see a original developer return to a game they made decades ago to improve it. That, however, is what happened with Sonic 3D when programmer Jon Burton and founder of Traveller's Tales released a mod for Sonic 3D on the SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis / Megadrive in 2017. While it's fair to say Traveller's Tales have had a lot of ups and downs with their games. With the quality of them ranging wildly, not to mention the amount of bugs they often featured such as the crashing hub in the original Lego Star Wars.
Sonic 3D was one of Traveller's Tales better games, partly due to it being a joint project with Sonic Team and the end result was a very impressive title with a few pacing and gameplay issues. It was a good game not a great one. There were issues with how Sonic controlled and the game had a serious lack of replay value, the special stages were also rather uninteresting and bland, along with the fact Super Sonic was also no where to be found and there was no save system. The lack of Tails and Knuckles as playable characters was also a shame.
This new patch addresses many of these issues and includes improved gameplay elements, on top of a new level creator feature. What you get is a version that adds in a hub menu system that allows you to select and replay any level in the game, a password system to save your progressive. The game is given far more replay value with a new time attack mode and the Sonic head icon are also turned into collectables, required for a 100% completion. You can now play as Super Sonic once you get all the Chaos Emeralds and you now only earn one Emerald per Zone. Tails and Knuckles have also been added to the later zones to allow this to happen. There are a number of colour palette changes to better fix the game, many of these seems to make it look closer to the Saturn version, a new crab enemy in Rusty Ruin, which was previously unused. Sonic also keeps his speed when running into walls and the game now tracks and highlights Flickys who are loose on the stage.
Jon Burton carefully coded this patch so that it didn't increase the size of the original cartridge image. There are many other adjustments and overall this patch vastly improves the game. While it lacks some of the Saturn version improvements such as the stage map and better special stages. It would be nice to see some of these changes added to the vastly superior SEGA Saturn version, but this seems unlikely.

Footage is captured from the emulator Fusion364 which matched the original Mega Drive / Genesis version of the original game the closest. The more advance emulators Exodus had graphics issues and Blastem seemed to run the game at an incorrect speed. Upscaled to UHD 4K to improve the video bit rate, watch in HD or UHD for best video playback on YouTube.
