Sonic the Fighters (or Sonic Championship) is the best left forgotten one-vs-one fighter featuring Sonic and pals, originally released in arcades for Sega Model 2 back in 1996. It's a shallow game, the controls are similar to Virtua Fighter and Fighting Vipers but the movelists are very simple. Chaining combos feels simply awkward and it's easy to keep exploiting specials for cheap play (atleast for the computer anyway).
Sonic Gems Collection itself wasn't a very impressive set either way and I wouldn't recommend it even if you plan on getting it just for Sonic CD, go for the recent PS3/360 ports instead.
