Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis) Playthrough
My apologies for taking so long for the next playthrough to come, since I was rather busy with college that I didn't have the time to do so. But now that I do, here's the playthrough of the original Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis.
Opinions:
The first Sonic the Hedgehog still remains a really good game in my eyes even after all these years. Likewise with Ghouls 'n Ghosts and the first two Oddworld games, it still remains a game I constantly come back to every once in a while.
The game excels in almost every department: the graphics are still beautiful to look at, the music in the game is brilliant, the controls are tight, the mixture of speed and platforming is great, the level design for the most part is pretty good while the difficulty while easy at first gets harder as you progress but it never feels frustrating or annoying.
The special stages of the game are pretty decent and interesting with the idea of a constantly rotating field and the rather bizarre backgrounds. It's also probably the most challenge you're gonna get out of the game: the first few aren't too bad, but the later ones are gonna be a bit difficult, since there are more spots that you'll find yourself being thrown into a GOAL, usually without warning. Despite that, it shouldn't be too difficult getting all 6 Chaos Emeralds.
The game does suffer a few minor issues, though. Despite the game's idea of mixing fast speed with good platforming, really only a few levels in the game take advantage of that (specifically all of Green Hill, and parts of Spring Yard and Star Light (even then, not a whole lot)), while the rest of the levels have more emphasis on slow and careful platforming, which isn't a big deal considering the good overall level design of the game. Another thing that bugs me a little is that most of the bosses are on the easy side and are fairly exploitable. The closest ones to a decent challenge is the Labyrinth Zone "boss" and the Final Zone boss, but still. Also, a few of the enemies in the game tend to have collision detection that's a little off that you'll kill the enemy but also get hurt at the same time.
Nonetheless, this still remains an enjoyable game to play that aged as well as you remember.
