Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis) Playthrough Part 1 (Sonic)
The first part of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 playthrough, where I play as Sonic alone.
Opinions:
The second Sonic the Hedgehog is an overall improvement over the first one, by essentially keeping what made the original great but adding more and improving on some of its issues.
The graphics here are better with more detail on the backdrops and sprites, the music is just as good and memorable, the controls remain tight, and the levels here are bigger and a bit longer while retaining to have good layouts... for the most part.
The game's difficulty is progressive, but it never comes to the point where it gets annoying nor frustrating. The bosses here are a bit more challenging this time around, especially in the later levels, though some of them can be easily exploited.
The special stages of the game have changed to a half-pipe where you have to collect a specific amount of rings in one part of the stage to move on to collect the Chaos Emerald. They are pretty good, though they aren't as difficult as the first game's special stages... at least when you're alone (we'll get to that when I get there), but they still aren't cakewalk or anything.
As for the 2-player mode, the competitive racing is a bit interesting that it goes beyond simply finishing the level quickly by trying to get the highest score and win 2 out of 3 times. The tie-breaker is a special stage level where whoever has the highest rings 2 out of 3 times is the winner (there is also one 2 out of 3 match featuring special stages only). For what it is, it's decent and can be fun for a bit, but it's kinda of a shame they didn't go with their original intention of a 2-player split-screen co-op of the normal game.
However, the game isn't without its problems. First off, while the level design in the zones are pretty good for the most part, there are a few segments that are kinda dumb like the infamous pit in the Mystic Cave or where in certain spots they put an enemy in a spot where it's hard to dodge... though it doesn't happen too often. Also, despite the fact that Tails is able to fly (or at least when he tries to catch up to you), you aren't given the ability to do so, making him nothing more than Sonic with some slight differences like a little higher jump and the inability to turn Super with normal Chaos Emeralds. Also, there's the stupid idea of simply jumping to turn into Super form instead of giving us the option by pressing the jump button again while in the air, forcing people to get less than 50 rings if they don't want to do so which is pretty difficult to do in certain spots. Speaking of the Super form, there is the infamous Super Sonic glitch at the end of the level that could be a game ender if you don't go off-screen for the score tally to appear. It does make the game reek of being rushed (which it technically was in a way), rather than taking their time.
While these problems are fairly minor, I do feel it could've been better if they had the time. Nonetheless, this still remains one of the best Sonic the Hedgehog games to play.
