Sonic the Hedgehog in Africa and More
49A variety of video game franchises including Sonic the Hedgehog ave featured Africa in some way. In this video we'll look at gaming series such as the Sonic the Hedgehog, Pikmin, Far Cry, and Sid Meier's Civilization. More specifically Sonic Unleashed, Pikmin3, Far Cry 2 and Civilization 4, 5, and 6. In these games we will explore how they utilize the African architecture style known as Sudano-Sahelian architecture.
The term Sudano Sahelian architecture refers to a range of similar African architectural styles found in the areas of the hot semi-arid Sahel and the Sudan which is a grassland region. That is between the Sahara and forest zones. Infact you might even call the Sudan a Green Hill Zone. ;)
This architectural style uses sustainable matierials such as mudbricks and adobe plaster, which is supported by wooden beams that often protrude from the walls. Some notable examples include the Great Mosque of Djenne, the Larabanga Mosque, Agadez, Timbuktu and more.
In the Sonic game we are analyzing today the Blue Blur goes globe trotting and one of the places he visits is Mazuri a continent inspired by Africa. The buildings we see in this level look like a fantasy version buildings from the country of Mali.
Whereas, Far Cry 2 features a recreation of a Dogon village from Mali in more realistic detail. The Dogon are a great African culture and its wonderful to see them represented in video games.
Next, we look at Pikmin 3 which has mud brick walls akin to the Sudano Sahelian style.
Finally on the list, are the Civilization games which not only feature the architecture but also shows depictions of Mansa Musa one of Africa's most famous leaders and the richest man in history.
