A look at the history of African American art. In this Black History video we delve into the connections between the art of African Americans and the art of their ancestors in Africa as we walk and talk through the Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC. In this presentation are featured various aspects of the culture of black people in America, the Diaspora, and Africa itself.
There are many other important artworks in African American history and this is only a small sample. Theirs plenty more to learn about the Black art history and culture. Please check out more Red Spirit Mask videos for other great educational content about Black culture.
The Black Artists featured in this video include James Phillips and his painting Sankofa 2 which is inspired by African patterns and Symbols such as the Akan Adinkra, Renee Stout and her sculpture Ceremonial Object, Chakaia Booker and the Urban Mask, and Jefferson Pinder's creation the Mothership (Capsule).
Also, a brief discussion of African American music takes place in this video as well regarding rappers such as Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and most important the classic black musician George Clinton and his hit song Atomic Dog.
