The Woman King and the African Culture of the Dahomey Kingdom
Learn about the African culture of the Dahomey Kingdom through an analysis of The Woman King movie starring Viola Davis as General Nanisca and John Boyega as King Ghezo. The film is based on the most exceptional women warriors to ever live, the Fon people's Ahosi A.K.A. Mino, Minon, Agoji, and most famously the Dahomey Amazons of Benin.
The remarkable story of The Woman King centers around the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who fought for the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s. The Woman King is inspired by true events and the real life culture and history of the African women from Dahomey one of the most powerful West African Kingdoms.
How will Hollywood’s portrayal of this unique African kingdom hold up to the real story of these powerful Black women in Africa's history? We shall see but so far the art direction is fantastic. The Dahomey culture is represented visually through the artifacts included in the film such as African swords known as Gubasa and Hwi, African architecture, African sculpture, African textiles, and more.
I hope you enjoy this educational documentary style video about the legendary warrior women Nanisca and Nawi and their culture.
