Traditional African Funeral Customs and Art of South Sudan
Learn about death rituals in East Africa in this video focused on the country of South Sudan where we explore how a traditional African funeral was conducted and examine the art surrounding the grave. In much of Africa's indigenous religions death is not the end but is seen as a transition to the ancestral plane and as an ancestor spirit one can still effect the living world. In South Sudan among the Bongo people as well as the Belanda, Basiri, Madi-Moro, Kref, Morokodu, Avukaya and others they create figural posts to give a body to the spirits after death. These funerary posts are known as Ngya and Lusi.
The art of these commemorative posts is likely an ancient practice. But they have become an increasingly rare art form in modern times. All the more reason to learn what these burial ceremonies were all about. The figure post art comes in a variety of styles from full body to abstract images. They record various accomplishments of the life of the dead.
During the video you will see Bongo memorial post being made in 3D.
