112The late Sir Joseph Hotung (1930-2021) was respected and revered in the art world for his Jade collection and for his philanthropy. What was much less known however was his discriminating eye for quality and design. His personal collection was beautifully displayed in his London residence yet seen only by a privileged few. In his residence, the glowing patinas of Chinese and English furniture perfectly counterbalanced the vibrant colouring of the Old Master and Impressionist paintings, set against exquisite works of art and porcelain from China, every piece rare and of the highest quality.
In The Private Collection of the Late Sir Joseph Hotung, Part II to be offered in London in December, English furniture, silver, Old Masters, Impressionist Paintings are amongst the highlights, including a museum quality portrait by Degas, matchless furniture by Thomas Chippendale, and paintings by Edouard Vuillard.
In this Sotheby's Spotlight, Chairman Henry Howard-Sneyd explores some of these highlights, including the Degas portrait, the highly important pair of silver candelabra made for the famous George III service and supplied by the Parisian silversmith Robert-Joseph Auguste, and the Thomas Chippendale chairs.
