Dang this game is rough! Very rough. Also I'm not very good at it, so there's that. As a comparison, I was playing Dungeons of Dredmor on the hardest difficulty and was able to get a pretty good run out of it (without much trouble, even, until the end), but here we're looking at the "Normal" difficulty (the second out of four, mind you) and this is painfully challenging. But again, this could just be a lack of recipes. Were I able to know how to construct my own weapons, armor, health, food, and what have you, this could be a very, very different game.

In fact, I'm almost tempted to play the game on an EASIER difficulty (mind-boggling, I know) just so I can figure out more recipes and apply them to the harder game. Anyone think that's a good idea? (Or at least after this run. I might do some kinda montage thing with it.) Depending on the roguelike, you can hit an unusual roadblock in this way, and it's unfortunately frustrating. I would be interested in, say, no-recipe runs and see if they're feasible.
