Sound Design Shorts: Kairos Fateweaver Hypes #1 OG Tzeentch
9Yo! Over the December period, I signed up for Akash Thakkar's Sound Design Essentials course. One of the tricks I picked up is what is known as Ghost/Side Chain Triggering.
As quickly as possible I'll mention that it's basically sidechaining a gate to let an alternate sound in as your main sound does its own thing either while being muted or is sounded as a foundational layer. You're essentially getting some much-needed jam and a warm beverage for your flavourless and dry ol' white bread layer that you regularly eat on a Friday afternoon.
Anyways what that meant for me and this sound design short was mixing some stretched and manipulated glass breaking sounds and tropical birds into the forever gifted/cursed demon bird Kairos Fate weaver. The speech itself is taken from the opening of the Total War: WH3 trailer.
I think it came out fine, but as always you gotta take some vital lessons away rather than aim for perfection.
1. De-ess'ers are your friend
2. A good vocal performance does most of the heavy lifting to keep things clear
3. Vocal manipulations are fun but they so easily turn into a mess.
In closing, don't be like Kairos and focus so much on the past and future that you lose sight of the present. That kind of thinking is only helpful to spiteful demon lords.
