Sovereign Syndicate is a Disco Elysium clone, yes, but it's still wort the 8.39$ that if currently goes for on GOG and Steam. A solid story, strong characters and a fantastic and refreshing setting keep this title afloat for the entirety of its play time. I would've rather had player agency, emergent gameplay and replay value (that would've been much more videogame like and much more RPGey) to do the heavy lifting, but this will have to do.
The playable characters are the standout aspect of the game. You have this game's version of Harry Dubois from disco Elysium in Atticus Daley, a victorian dwarven Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher series and Clara Reed, a streetwise witty dolly with a colorful past.
The setting is an alternate version of Victorian London where minotaurs, centaurs, cyclops and other mythical creatures wander about.
And the story is a tale of mystery in which the mystery aspect is well handled.
This is a CYOA game that sells itself as a video game... an RPG no less, one in which there is no combat. But, are there better combat-less RPGs? For sure: Gamedec, Citizen Sleeper and, of course, Disco Elysium come to mind. If you are a story-first RPG lover, you probably have played all of those, if you haven't... well. there you go.
