This song is extremely, extremely important to me. It is dedicated to a special person who introduced me to Transistor. This song is for him, and it's for anyone who has ever faced depression and wondered if it's worth fighting to see see tomorrow. You can also think about it as Red stubbornly refusing to give up or give in, no matter what anyone else says.
The original Blank Canvas is just a series of looping chords building up to a climactic moment at the end of the game — but I took it further and made a complete song of it. I wrote lyrics, I wrote melodies, I arranged instrumentation, I brought it to life as a relatively complex piece of music. Normally I make covers that are very close to the original, so this was a departure for me. It was the hardest piece of music I have ever worked on, both creatively and emotionally. I poured my whole heart into it. (I also wholesale ripped a line from the lyrics of my favorite song of all time, a rather obscure choir piece, so kudos to you if you can pick it out.)
Because this song is so personally important to me, I asked some of my closest friends in the VGM community to contribute and I was honored when they agreed to take part. A few additional lovely folks agreed to fill the remaining gaps, including wolfman1405, who stepped up at the last minute and knocked it out of the park with the male vocal line.
I would also be remiss if I did not draw singular attention to my dear friend Danny Romberger, a fantastic composer and educator who has served as my musical mentor for the past year and a half. Danny gave me so much advice and support through the process of making this song. Thank you, Danny! You're the best. Danny can be found at https://www.youtube.com/dannymusic
Also, yes, that fanart you see at the beginning and end is my own artwork!
