SpellCaster is the first of two Sega-developed games based off of Makoto Ogino's controversial "Kujaku Ou" (Peacock King or "Spirit Warrior") franchise. Sega took the adventure elements found in the MSX and Famicom versions of the game and simplified them while adding original combat scenes where the player controls Kujaku (known in this game as Kane). While the original manga and anime possessed many religious and spiritual overtones, quite a bit was lost in translation when the game hit home consoles.

In SpellCaster, you, Kane, are a monk summoned by the great spiritual leader of Summit Temple, Daikak, to find out who killed the temple guardians while stopping warring warlords from controlling the world. You can investigate towns and other areas in a menu-driven adventure fashion and fight enemies in side-scrolling segments in action areas. You can increase your attack and defense as well as learn and use spells to make your life easier. The follow-up, Kujaku Ou 2: Geneishiro (also known as "Mystic Defender") ditches the Adventure/RPG elements entirely.

This is a video of some of the game in action. Enjoy.
