It’s a little jarring to look at now because of its pixelated look thanks to the Super FX chip, which created a more three-dimensional look. It was a breakthrough back then, but now, it looks a bit passe. The good news is the gameplay still holds up pretty well and there’s a decent amount of depth thanks to the multiple routes the gamer can take. The story involves Fox and his quarter of Arwing pilots trying to save the Lylat system from the evil Andross, who is invading all the planets and is setting his sights on Corneria. It’s mostly a backdrop and the characters on your team are pretty one-note and are there mostly to offer color.
The levels themselves are a mix of space and surface missions. There also are missions where you’re in first-person mode and others in third. There’s a nice mix between the two and the levels don’t repeat themselves or their settings too much. The visuals aren’t much to look at, but slowdown isn’t a regular occurrence and the enemies have some imaginative designs. The game handles pretty well, but gamers do have to be on their toes.
The standout, though, is the soundtrack, which is among the very best OSTs for the Super Nintendo. Even though several cues are repeated, it’s always a pleasure to hear them and they are quite catchy.
Star Fox’s three routes range from easy to hard and the third route, in particular, really throws the gauntlet at the gamer. The bosses are aggravating down the stretch and it does feel a bit unfair at times. Particularly phase 1 of Great Commander, which was not a good design choice. Great intro music, at least.
Star Fox might not be much to look at, but for those curious to see the franchise’s origins, it is worth a playthrough.
