Taking a break from Tales, a JRPG series with colorful characters and real-time combat, to play Star Ocean, a JRPG series with colorful characters and real-time combat, is maybe a lateral move at best and "selling your cow to buy milk" at worst but I'm having too much fun to care.

Played on Universe difficulty (Hard mode,) First playthrough, Raymond's side

This isn't a full run or anything btw, I've just been playing the crap out of this game and wanted to see how viable it could be for future projects and got this insane take while practicing. I still haven't gone to the second post-game dungeon since I'm having so much fun trying out different characters in a solo setting, and I find this fight is pretty good for that since the attacks are big and easy to dodge, yet also punishing if you don't so even though I'm at level cap (EXP equipment is fucking busted btw lol) there's still a decent challenge here. That said, this game is pretty easy in general but it has some banger boss fights here and there.

Marielle is one of my favorites in the cast and you can build her essentially as a long-range attacker or a close-range bruiser, or something in between the two which is my preferred playstyle. I've stacked some long-range damage multipliers (hence the larger damage numbers when I'm at what the game interprets as long range) but aside from that this build is very unoptimized. Dead-Angle Shooting increases damage when attacking from behind an enemy, and Point-Blank Range increases damage dealt when close to an enemy. If you stack close-range multipliers on your equipment as well you can really dish out some serious punishment during Blindside.

Gabriel has a couple of different attacks that need to be dealt with in different ways.
- Spear laser thingy : Stay outside of melee range and get some damage in before dodging the giant laser. After what seems like a health threshold Gabriel can stop before the laser and start the attack over from the beginning. This is no biggie for Marielle since she's ranged but it can be tricky for melee characters. He can also end with the spear AoE attack instead of the laser, again after a health threshold

- Gravity thingy : Run/sprint away from Gabriel. After a while, it's safe to attack since the remaining suction on the attack (gross) won't be enough to drag you into the damaging part.

- Spear ground AoE : From what I've seen the spears can either go in a + or x pattern, maybe they alternate but I can't say for sure. It's risky to try and dodge this one to the side since you could perfect dodge one set of spears and end up jumping right into another.

- Dragon AoE thingy??? : This one lasts forever so it's a perfect opportunity to back up and throw out some big lasers, literally.

- Charge Catastrophe : A lot of bosses have an attack or a state where they can be Blindsided, and this is Gabriel's. Marielle's Vanguard Assault (the dash before the Blindside) is a little shorter than other characters' so paradoxically you need to move closer than you think in order to trigger a Blindside. If you don't go for it because you're either too far away or in a bad spot then a simple roll to the side will dodge this attack, too. Don't get hit though, that shot one-shits you. Er, that shit one-shots you.
