Lucasarts first attempt to create a Star Wars ground based real-time strategy game got a rough ride in 2000, while graphically the game was impressive for the RTS genre in 2000 and one of the first full 3D RTS games. Force Commander's high system spec meant that the game didn't run that well and some of the game's design choices went against the flow of other RTS games from the era. In recent years it turned out the game was just rather buggy and even modern PC have issues running the game smoothly. While both Empire at War and Galactic Battlegrounds are better RTS Star Wars games. Force Commander laid the ground work and is still rather enjoyable to play. While Supremacy / Rebellion was an earlier RTS it only included real time space battles. Far from a perfect game but miles better than a lot of reviewers at the time would have had you think.

However getting it to run on a modern system is a real problem, first off you need an updated version of the install shield program to even get the installer running on 64bit OS: http://www.reactos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=90351 (Download at own risk)

Then if you do that you will need to edit the reg files to point to the right drives for both CD and hard drive. Once you've done that you will need to find the install folder and going into the resources directory and correct the Focom.ini so that the game can also see your CD and Hard drive correctly in order to clear the disc check software.

Finally if you want to alter the settings you will need a program like dgvoodoo 2, as the original setting program refuses to run on Windows 7 and above. Oh and you will need to set windows compatibility mode to 98 and for the focom.exe it's a good idea to also disable both visual theme and desktop composition. The intro also work better on XP Service pack 2, but that mode causes the music to crash. You can only run the game via the focom.exe If you try and run the Force.exe it will just crash over and over again. Oh and yes the movies used Lucasarts own movie format of .znm files, which no longer work correctly on modern system. In fact it is luck we managed to get them to run at all, while they are included for completion purposes they aren't running correctly and the audio is out of sync and the video has a strange filter and jerky frame rate. In short it is a nightmare to get running on modern systems.
