Stayin Alive in Planet Explorers Ep. 7

In this episode, we kill us some indigenous population. And we would like very much to go on killing them bunches.
All of which raises some interesting theoretical questions. Okay, so they diligently checked out the planet beforehand (according to the statements of the survivors) and somehow did not detect the presence of indigenous intelligent life forms. They landed, the indigenous population attacked them on sight. Should the colonists:
1. Hope there is a followup mission so they can head back to Earth at earliest opportunity, leaving this planet to its original inhabitants, even with the knowledge that there is no guarantee that the indigenous population will ever develop above the iron age, or,
2. Stake a claim to a piece of the planet and kill any of the original inhabitants who have an issue with their presence, leaving open the possibility of diplomacy but using superior firepower if needed.
This sounds like a highly theoretical question, but it really isn't. It already happened many times. When homo sapiens entered new areas of the planet, there were already people there. Sometimes homo neanderthalensis or denisovians or homo erectus. And these were all, the first one especially, legitimately intelligent beings. They were people.
Homo sapiens is believed to have sometimes interbred with them, but likely for the most part their mode of operation was, "We're here now, fuck with us and we'll eat you." Or sometimes maybe just "We're here now and we're going to eat you." And the other representatives of the genus homo one way or another went away. Might have been morally questionable for our ancestors to have invaded their space, but if they hadn't we might not be here. If we were in these colonists shoes, would we say, "We tried to avoid this, but we're here now so get screwed", or would we say, "I'm sorry, iron-age morons, our bad, we will leave right away?" Does the fact that we were capable of interplanetary travel prove our worthiness to expand through the universe, or should we follow the prime directive and leave the planet to it's original inhabitants?
Important questions, ones without easy answers, but it is likely that where the overall survival of the species is concerned, morality is probably out the window. Or at least it always has been in the past. I think if I were in Boppy's shoes, I would say, "We really really really messed up, we truly did, and I'm sorry we did. This should never have happened. It was never our intention to colonize a planet that already had an indigenous intelligent life form. But we've come a long distance, we are here now, and we're staying."
"So recognize, bitches." ;)
