5Testing the Steam Controller
When Valve announced a gamepad able to play FPS I was very sceptical. Finally the wait is over, and we can now judge for ourselves.
If you intend to test the Steam Controller, you better try it first on a Valve game. And the best title to make yourself confortable with is Portal 2.
Based on my own first day, the pad seems confortable enough for a gaming session.
The trackpads seems about fine, not as precise as a mouse, but it does a better job than the everyday trackpad on any laptop.
Unfortunately, it feels like it will take time to get used to the rear triggers (first time i've been using the annular finger on a gamepad).
As a result, I would judge the playability of an FPS with the steam controller this way; By order of playableness :
1/ Gamepad with analog stick (Just bad imho =)
2/ Trackball ( Not good either )
3/ Trackpad ( Precise, but slow )
4/ Steam Controller
4/ Old mechanical mice (yeah, the fourty year old technology)
5/ Optical mice
After one day of practice, the steam controller feels promising.
Will probably never be as good as a keyboard+mice, but it will probably be the best gamepad to play pc games.
